These are two tools that are great for troubleshooting a PC. While they might not tell you exactly what is wrong with the computer, intelligent deduction after using these tools typically leads to the proper solution.
Testing RAM is a very basic task and is made extremely easy with memtest32+. This free application can be recorded to bootable media or copied to USB pen drive and will test all of the RAM. This is accomplished by the program testing all of the RAM around itself and then moving itself into another location of memory in order to test the RAM location that it also occupies.

Burn-In-Test is an application that can be used to help diagnose a wide variety of hardware issues, ranging from RAM to disk drives to network interfaces. I would not necessarily recommend this as the best solution for testing RAM since it is not as versitale as Memtest 32+, but it is great for testing the CPU itself and other hardware inside the computer.
